Weight loss can be very difficult. I often see patients who exercise and eat a healthy diet, yet they can't seem to lose weight. Some even gain weight! If this sounds like you, you may have a damaged metabolism. Below are my 10 favorite strategies I use to help my patients lose weight.
1) Insulin Resistance and Weight Loss Insulin is a hormone released in response to blood sugar which greatly impacts weight loss. Insulin forces your cells to use sugar from the blood for energy. If the cells become resistant to the insulin, sugar will not get used for energy. Rather, this excess sugar must be stored as fat, making you fatter. If too much sugar builds up in the blood (diabetes), it can cause large amounts of damage. Restoring insulin sensitivity is a great way to reduce body fat and it is also the best anti-aging step you can take. Read more about Insulin Resistance and Diabetes.
2) Adrenal Fatigue and Weight Loss Stress will make you release high amounts of adrenaline and cortisol which will break down structures in your body such as your muscles and your gut. It will cause poor digestion, preventing you from absorbing nutrients from food. High cortisol levels will lead to fat gain around the belly and eventually to adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue leads to low cortisol levels which will cause bloating after you eat, sleep disturbances (waking at night) and overall weight gain. When cortisol is too low, excess estrogen is produced which binds to thyroid hormone, rendering the hormone useless. Those with adrenal fatigue will have difficulty with weight loss unless the adrenals are addressed.
3) Thyroid Function and Weight Loss Thyroid hormones regulate the metabolic rate of all the cells in the body. Low functioning thyroid glands are very common, as are problems with thyroid utilization. People with low thyroid (hypothyroid) might experience problematic weight gain, fatigue, weakness, cold hands or feet, constipation, or develop brittle hair. Thyroid function is intimately linked to adrenal function and to estrogen. I always test the adrenals when I find thyroid dysfunction. If the adrenals are not functioning properly, thyroid treatment is rarely successful. Another common finding in those with low thyroid is severe iodine deficiency which can also increase a person's risk of cancer of the breast, ovaries, testes, stomach and prostate. Read more about Hypothyroid Disorders.
4) Estrogen Imbalances and Weight Loss Those with excessive fat stores (women and men) tend to have excess estrogen. This is because fat cells store and release estrogen (as well as cortisol and inflammatory agents). In fact, body fat is now considered an endocrine organ. Excess estrogen stresses the adrenal glands and binds to thyroid hormone, making weight loss very difficult. Excess estrogen is also closely linked to many types of cancer including breast cancer and prostate cancer. It is very important for both men and women to have your estrogen (along with thyroid and adrenals) monitored and possibly treated to avoid high risk of these types of cancer and all of the obesity related diseases. There are natural substances that are very effective at aiding estrogen metabolism and proper detoxification and elimination of estrogen by-products.
5) Mercury Toxicity and Weight Loss If you have ever had silver dental fillings in your teeth, you are probably mercury toxic. There is actually more mercury than silver in those ugly black filings. Mercury poisoning can cause overgrowth of parasites and yeast that can cause you to have sugar cravings, ultimately leading to weight gain. Other conditions made worse by mercury include anxiety, depression, hypertension, heart disease, and general toxicity. Mercury is very difficult for your body to eliminate and therefore must be carefully removed by chelation. When the mercury is eliminated, the yeasts, parasites and other bugs tend to go away along with the sugar cravings. Weight loss is then much easier to achieve. Read more about Mercury Poisoning.
6) Detoxification and Weight Loss Toxins bind to our cells causing them to act inappropriately. Toxins can also destroy the cell all together. This causes inflammation that can lead to changes in appetite and the inability to burn fat as energy. I must give caution to anyone who is trying to drop body fat. If your fat cells are very toxic, rapid weight loss can release those toxins into your blood stream at high levels. This is one reason why people might not feel very well or might get sick once they begin to loose weight. I can help you implement strategies to avoid getting poisoned by your own toxins during fat loss. Read more about Detox.
7) Food Allergies/Sensitivities and Weight Loss Some people are born with food allergies and some people develop them later in life. Some reactions occur within minutes and are very severe. Other reactions can take days and may only appear to be mild. During these delayed allergic reactions a large amount of inflammation can occur throughout the body which can cause problems with insulin sensitivity and many other problems that can lead to weight gain. 8) Sleep Disturbances and Weight Loss Your body constantly break itself down and then repair itself. Sleep is when the most repair occurs. Growth hormone, which is at very high levels during deep sleep, helps the repair processes. Muscle needs growth hormone in order to repair itself after exercise as well. When you have more muscle mass, you burn more calories and fat in order to maintain that muscle. Leptin, another hormone produced during deep sleep, tells your brain you are full after eatinga meal. Without proper sleep, cravings due to low leptin levels are very common. Read more about Sleep Disorders.
9) Neurotransmitter Imbalances and Weight Loss Neurotransmitters such as serotonin send signals to your brain to regulate hunger. Low serotonin levels seem to be common based on the fact that 25 million Americans have taken SSRI (Prozac type) drugs aimed at boosting serotonin levels. Low levels in serotonin can lead to depression and anxiety, sleep disorders, pain and cravings (especially for sugars), which leads to obesity. Normal serotonin levels can easily be achieved with natural therapies. Read more about Serotonin.
10) Gut Dysbiosis and Dysfunctiton and Weight Loss Your gut contains trillions of bacteria that line your gut. Some of them are very beneficial, helping you breakdown food and make nutrients from the food. Others can cause serious illnesses. The friendly ones help you digest your foods, while the bad ones can cause absorption problems as well as inflammation. With proper care, you can balance your gut bacteria, improve your overall health, and lose weight. Read more about Gut Dysfunction.
